“One of the classic myths about hair loss and male pattern baldness is whether bald men are somehow more masculine, sexier, or “more manly” because of higher hormone levels.
It’s a question I often get from patients.
So, I did some digging and found studies that give us an answer — and there’s more than one.
In 1979, Barton conducted a study comparing men with advanced baldness and those with a full head of hair. They measured several “masculinity markers” such as body hair, sweating, and sebum production. The result? No difference between men with hair and those without.
But the question of masculinity remained. So, in the mid-1990s, a larger study (1994–1997) examined 2,836 men — half with full hair and half in different stages of baldness. What did they find? Both groups reported a similar number of sexual encounters per week.
However, the study also showed that bald men were less likely to have had more than four sexual partners in their lifetime. Now, you might say, “Who cares about four? I’m just looking for one partner!” — and I’d agree. But some men value variety, and baldness seemed to reduce those chances.
So, are bald men considered sexier by women? The truth is: it depends on the woman. Some will say they prefer a man with a full head of hair, and then fall madly in love with someone bald. There’s no single answer.
What really matters is how you feel about yourself. If hair loss or baldness makes you feel unattractive, that mindset itself can impact your confidence — and nothing is less sexy than low self-esteem. On the other hand, confidence is always sexy, with or without hair.
At the end of the day, hair is just hair.
And Hollywood proves it: Jason Statham, The Rock, Vin Diesel, even Sean Connery — all bald, all considered masculine and sexy. They’re exceptions, yes, but the point is clear: with or without hair, what counts is how you feel.
So, if hair loss or male pattern baldness makes you unhappy with your image, I can help. Not only can I help you change your look — I can help you change how you feel about yourself.”
